Neighbourly ideas to fight the recession. Part 1
Posted in Home on February 14, 2009 by KingstonReviewAs if paying off those credit card bills from Christmas wasn’t enough, we are now being faced with layoffs and cutbacks due to the recession. We at the Kingston Road Village decided to put our heads together and come up with a few ideas that will not only help you save a few pennies, but also help our local businesses endure these tough times. Here are some of the ideas we came up with.
1. Shop at some of the local merchants that specialize in second hand merchandise. For those of us looking to spruce up or change up our living space, Memories Now And Then offers a great selection of furniture, art work and household trinkets. The Great Escape book store ( 957 Kingston Road) has a wide variety of gentle used books for both adults and children. You might also want to check out the thrift store Pegasus for some well priced clothing. They also offer hand made soaps and baking mixes.
2. If you enjoy a steaming mug of fresh coffee at home, you might want to try buying your coffee beans at The Savoury Grounds Coffee Co. (971 Kingston Road). Their coffee is roasted on site so they are able to offer it at a really great price and if you join their Bean Club, you can get your 11th pound for free.
3. Get fit for free. Join a local walking or running club or bundle up the kids and walk, hike or jog through Glen Stewart Ravine (starting just west of Beech Avenue on the south side of Kingston Road). Also Toronto Parks and Recreation offers some great, affordable fitness programs for the whole family.

Lost two businesses!
Posted in Home on February 12, 2009 by KingstonReviewWell, we have lost two more businesses from our community. Cast Your Anchor has moved to deep Scarborough. Still available if you need them @ 4117 Lawrence Ave. E. Their beautiful boats in the windows will be missed by both young and the old. We also lost Lation Fitness in Henley Gardens. Unfortunatly they did not move to another location. And that is the problem of a membership based business. I have already heard of people who have lost out because they had prepaid for their membership.
What do you think of memberships?

Looking forward to spring!
Posted in Home on February 9, 2009 by KingstonReviewWell, we have had some mild weather this past weekend and I have noticed more people out and about. It may not last long.
I am asking people in the community what they would like to see more of in our blog. So far neighbours have told me they would like to know about what new stores are opening and also more reviews of our local restaurants.
I am also looking for any old pictures of Kingston Road between Fallingbrook and Main Street to create a archive. If you have any pictures that you could send they would be appreciated.
We are also looking for contributors for the blog. If you are interested please email me @ steve@savourygrounds.com

For you creative types. The weekend of May the 3rd & 4th there is The Art and Design show along Kingston Road. Come and stroll along and see what our great stores have in the way of Art, clothing and interior design. Also there is the Beach Studio Tour (beachstudiotour.ca) From May the 2nd – 4th at various locations in the beach.
I Had the Chicken!
Posted in Restaurant Reviews with tags beaches, kingston, restaurant, upper, wings on November 27, 2007 by KingstonReviewThe other night I decided to try out the Green Dragon. I ordered the wings as well as their half chicken. The wings were nice and plump with a nice sauce on them. The rotisserie half chicken was nicely seasoned and cooked just right. No mashed potatoes that night so I had the fries instead. They were the thick hand cut style which had nice flavour. I look forward to trying the ribs and mashed potatoes next time.
